Stephanie Nolting on Carrying Heavy Loads
When your physical demands require you to load the body on one side greater than the other this can create strain in the body either with one event or over time. One-sided loads can be stepping into a tall vehicle or carrying weight on one side. I see people all the time who have back pain and don’t know how it started. It is usually something in their normal routine that feels like it’s not a burden, but over time this wears on the body enough to become painful.
A full body assessment by a physical therapist can find the root cause of the pain and correct the mechanical loads and adjust postural habits to become pain-free. For people who have a specific event or trauma that started their pain, this is even easier to target and treat. Point being, to get rid of back pain is possible and PT will help you. If you’ve never had pain but know you demand uneven loads on your body on a regular basis, then you should still be screened by a PT to prevent any pain in your future. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
We have a complimentary workshop in August to help prevent improper load bearing. Adrian Gomez will be going over simple techniques and screenings to pinpoint your imbalances and help adjust them.
